A MIME type (Content-Type) is the label that tells browsers and servers what a file is: image/png, application/pdf, text/csv and so on. If an upload fails with “unsupported file type”, or you need to set the right Content-Type header on a server, check the file’s MIME type here. The file is read in your browser and is not sent anywhere.

How to find a MIME type

  1. Pick the file with the file field.
  2. Name, type (MIME), size and last modified date appear in the table.
  3. An empty type means the browser does not know the extension; check the file extension.

Common MIME types

  • image/jpeg, image/png, image/webp, image/svg+xml: images
  • application/pdf: PDF documents
  • text/csv, application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet: CSV and Excel (.xlsx)
  • application/zip: ZIP archives
  • text/vcard: contact card (.vcf) files

MIME type FAQ

What is a MIME type?

A standard “type/subtype” label for a file format (e.g. image/png). Browsers and servers use it to decide how to handle the file.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The details are read in your browser; the file is not sent anywhere.

Does the type check the file contents?

The browser mostly derives the type from the file extension, so a renamed file can show a different type.

What is the MIME type of a .vcf contact card?

text/vcard. The “save contact” button on digital business cards downloads a file of this type.
